Every woodworker has to resort to hand-sanding at some point. If you’re using standard sandpaper sheets and folding them to create a makeshift sanding pad, we’ve got some tips that will extend the life of the abrasive.
First off, most sandpaper sheets are rather stiff. “Breaking” the sandpaper sheet before use makes the paper more flexible.
When folding a sheet of sandpaper, the grit side is folded against the adjacent grit on the sheet. During use, the grit-to-grit contact greatly shortens the life of the abrasive.
