SUMMARY:Florida Woodturning Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Inspiring the Next Generation of Woodturning Craftsmen\nFebruary 14th – February 16th\, 2025\, Lakeland FL \nThis annual event is dedicated to sharing and promoting the art and craft of woodturning by holding multiple informative workshops\, exhibits from renowned woodturners and an extensive expo of vendors.\nThis year the Florida Woodturning Symposium\, in conjunction with the RP Funding Center\, will add a field trip to the symposium for students from the Construction Academies of the Polk County School System. Construction Academy students from Bartow\, Tenoroc\, Ft. Meade and Roosevelt high schools will attend a demonstration\, visit the instant gallery of turned art and tour the vendor area. At these schools\, students receive hands-on experience in construction\, gaining precision and problem-solving skills directly applicable to real-world careers. Academy students regularly compete and win at state and national construction competitions. At the end of their studies\, students take certification tests from the Home Builders Institute.\nWoodturning is more than a craft; it is also an art form. It can offer students a creative outlet\, allowing them to express artistic ideas while developing fine motor skills and attention to detail. Woodturning encourages innovation and craftsmanship\, teaching patience and the value of working with one’s hands. These experiences help foster a sense of accomplishment and self-expression\, making woodturning an ideal avenue for students seeking both artistic expression and personal growth.\nThe Florida Woodturners in conjunction with Polk County schools and the RP Funding Center want to promote the art of woodturning as a skill for all ages. The symposium is an opportunity to expose and increase interest in woodturning. As with any craft\, woodturning provides a wealth of benefits for the youth that are interested\, both in the short and long term. DESCRIPTION:An event featuring the many interesting ways in which wood is used\nJune 20th – June 22nd\, 2026\, East Dean UK \nExhibitors include trade stands selling timber and many other wood-related products\, demonstrations of sawmilling\, pole lathes\, and hurdle making. There will be the Hamble and Hound Gundog Club providing gundog displays twice a day\, a chainsaw race on the Saturday & Sunday and pole climbing demonstrations across all 3 days. On Saturday & Sunday will be The Dorset Axemen’s displays that contain all aspects of speed and accuracy chopping and crosscut sawing with razor sharp axes and saws. The British Lawnmower Racing Association will be running lawnmower racing on the Saturday & Sunday.\nA new event this year is a charity fundraising go-kart race called ‘The Valley Go-Kart Challenge’. Weather permitting there will be hot air balloons\, from the Surrey & Sussex Balloon Group\, taking off from the wood fair both early mornings & early evenings. Heavy horses will be pulling a wooden pole-waggon and putting on logging demonstrations and a tractor & trailer ride will take you into the depths of the forest. Plus newer activities\, like crazy croquet and I’m a lumberjack get me out of here are returning.\nThe Sussex Scrumpy Stakes are on Saturday & Sunday\, which is a free entry competition. There will be lots of other activities to take part in\, such as axe-throwing and archery\, or you could try your hand at the timber identification competition or hammer in the nail challenge\, both of which are free to enter. Plus the log roll will be available\, which is always popular with the kids. You will be able to see the steam engine powering a saw mill\, some vintage tractors and other steam engines & lorries\, and there will be some showroom products down in the field.\nA wide range of food and drink will be available.
