Years ago, while working as an editor for a U.S. woodworking magazine, the designer came up with this design for a shoulder plane using off-the-shelf parts. For example, the adjustment mechanism is made from lamp parts. The plane was a feature project for the magazine. When I saw the finished product, I knew I had to make one for myself.

The trickiest part of the assembly was cutting the interlocking dovetails that join the brass sides with the steel sole. It wasn’t as difficult as it first appeared. The parts are fitted together then the brass is peened to fill any gaps and lock the joints together. In the end, I had a nice, attractive shoulder plane that worked like a dream.
