Hooked on Hand Tools – Coffin-Style Plane:
Randy Maxey gets hooked on hand tools and this time it is the Krenov coffin-style plane.
I’ve always wanted to try my hand at making a coffin-style plane. I found some curly maple and thought it would look good for my smoothing plane. I cheated, though, and made the plane in the “Krenov” style by slicing off the sides from a block of maple, forming the bed and mouth opening, then gluing the parts together. The shaping was done with files and rasps. A custom wedge holds the thick plane iron in place.
This plane is unique in some ways because it features an adjustable mouth. As a plane wears, the bottom will occasionally need flattened, which makes the mouth wider. An adjustable wood plate in front of the iron determines the width of the mouth opening.
