Wedding goblet
My granddaughter, Bethany, is getting married soon, so I thought it would be nice to make her and Sam a wedding goblet. It will get busy soon as my wife is doing the flowers for the wedding etc., so I needed to get it made. The story goes that an Irish man wanted to make his betrothed a gift for the wedding. He came up with the idea that two rings on the shaft of a goblet would be a lasting reminder of their love. Also if one ring broke it would show the end of their love.
Finding a 3in square piece of wood by 10in long, I turned it round with a tenon on one end, reversed it in the lathe, and hollowed out the cup. I continued by shaping the cup outside and making a jam chuck to fit the cup size. Next, I cut out the two rings and then taped them to the outside of the cup. This allowed me to turn the base and finally the shaft. I then sanded and polished it for a finish.
There may be another family wedding next year, so as I had all the tools there that I required, I made another one. Now no worries, I’m prepared well in advance for the first time.

Woodworks

Woodworks at Daventry, the club show run by Tudor Rose Woodturners, proved to be our best show ever! The show took place on 9/10 May and we saw in excess of 900 visitors visiting, many from distant parts of the country and from Ireland. Trade stands did a brisk business and the inter-club competitions were extremely closely fought.
International demonstrators were present at the show, drawing large audiences. Altogether it was a great event which only encourages us to repeat it with renewed vigour for 2026. Provisional dates for 2026 are 14/15 May. Thanks once again for Woodturning magazine’s support.
Regards, Bryan Brumfield (club secretary)
