This Week from the Woodworkers Institute – Newsletter 20

Each week we bring you a round-up of interesting and entertaining woodworking content from the Woodworkers Institute and the web, including handy tips to help you get stuck into your next woodworking project.

Choosing the right finish

Selecting the right finish for wooden surfaces is crucial for both aesthetics and longevity. A finish can not only enhance the natural beauty of the wood but also provide protection against wear, moisture and environmental factors.

One of the primary considerations when choosing a finish is durability. Regularly-used surfaces, such as floors and worktops, require robust finishes like polyurethane or hard wax oil, which offer strong resistance to scratches, spills, and heat. In contrast, furniture pieces or decorative woodwork may benefit from softer finishes like shellac or wax, which provide a more natural look but require regular maintenance.

Another key factor is moisture resistance. In kitchens, bathrooms or outdoor settings, wood is frequently exposed to humidity and water. In these cases, finishes such as marine varnish, exterior oils, or epoxy coatings are important for preventing warping, swelling, or rot.

The aesthetic impact of a finish should also be considered. Matte finishes create an understated modern look, while glossy finishes enhance grain patterns and give a more polished appearance. Stains and tinted oils allow for colour customisation while maintaining the wood’s natural texture. Furthermore, environmental concerns play a role in finish selection. Water-based finishes produce fewer harmful fumes and are more eco-friendly than traditional solvent-based options.

Ultimately, the correct finish extends the lifespan of wooden surfaces, preserves their appearance and ensures they perform well under specific conditions.
