This Week from the Woodworkers Institute – Newsletter 4

Each week we bring you a round-up of interesting and entertaining woodworking content from the Woodworkers Institute and the web

A Date for the Calendar

The All-Women Woodturning Week is set to take place in County Carlow, Ireland, in August 2025 – and aims to promote diversity in the field. The week runs from August 25-29 and is part of the Train the Trainer programme, which aims to help women woodturners develop their skills and learn to teach others. The event offers a scholarship for women interested in woodturning – particularly those aiming to share their knowledge in educational settings or local woodturning clubs. Find of the Week

Colourful Russian Orthodox church with onion domes, sunny day.

The Wooden Cathedral with no Nails

Ascension Cathedral in Almaty, Kazakhstan, is a marvel of engineering. It was built in 1904-1907 almost entirely from wood, without the use of a single nail. Instead, pegs were used to hold the huge structure together, with traditional techniques chosen over the modern approaches available at the time. It is regarded as one of the finest examples of Russian Orthodox architecture, with its colourful exterior and golden domes set against the city’s mountainous backdrop. For years it was one of the tallest wooden structures in the world, and its unique construction made it particularly resistant to earthquakes, as shown in 1911 when many of its surrounding buildings fell to a strong earthquake. A 3D view inside this magnificent building can be found HERE.
